Here's some food for thought from the ADVICE column in the Financial Post - "...if you don't have values or "higher purpose" at the heart of your business, you may be losing out in the battle for the hearts and minds of customers, suppliers and employees."
As I was reading the article, TOMS Shoes came to mind as a great example of a company with the kind of higher purpose they're talking about.

I think having a noble cause might be an added bonus, and might help sway some customers who otherwise don't have a strong preference... but I tend to think that other factors might be more important, like low prices, convenience, etc. Otherwise Wal-Mart probably wouldn't be doing as well as it is.
